Budai is a Chinese folkloric deity and is also referred to by the Sanskrit name Maitreya, the future Buddha. In this series he is shown in a more modern interpretation, rather than the traditional joyful or laughing depiction. According to Chinese history, Budai was a humble monk, who was considered a man of good and loving character.
